Benebikira Hospitality Houses

Hospitality Houses’ Role in Strengthening Rwanda

The Hospitality Houses of the Benebikira sisters of Rwanda play a small but vital role in the country’s steady recovery from the tragic genocide of 1994. As a native Roman Catholic congregation of 400 sisters with 40 schools, clinics and social services scattered throughout the country, the sisters’ efforts are a sign of unity and hope for Rwanda.

A defining characteristic of the Benebikira sisters is their strategy of creating revenue generating projects that provide financial sustainability for their charitable work. These projects range from such things as engaging in traditional farming enterprises to the operation of three hospitality houses, two in the city of Butare and one in Kibeho, the site of Africa’s only Marian Shrine.

Rather than relying on interest from an endowment, African religious groups and charitable organizations, particularly those in Rwanda, use funds directly to start businesses that are both socially responsible and profitable. These projects contribute to the development of the country’s economy, create jobs, and provide a needed revenue stream for much needed health, education and social services.

Contributing to the overall growth of the economy is extremely important in developing countries. Rwanda’s investment climate now is considered one of the best in Africa because of its stability, good governance and reputation for anti-corruption. Still, attracting investments from abroad is a challenge; thus the investment of funds by the country's non-profit and religious groups is significant.
