Capturing the Young Urban Adolescent As a young adolescent, you are trying to figure out just who you are. You want to be independent, like by your peers, belong to a group and express yourself. At this age, you might find it hard to have a healthy self-image and positive relationships with adults, but without either you might be at-risk. You have an innate curiosity and still enjoy learning, but the traditional middle school setting is larger, less personable and more rigid than elementary school. You could be a motivated student that wants to get into one of the "exam schools," but you need support to accomplish your goals. You might be a student from a family where English is not spoken at home. You might be the type of student who struggles to keep your head above water, are losing interest in school, or even failing. Simply put, you are just not getting what you need in school. In any case, this is a critical age for intervention. The right type of support can make a life-altering differnce... The Paraclete Center offers a variety of academic classes, some of which provide enrichment opportunities for students with potential for admission to Boston's prestigious exam schools and some of which provide extra instruction and practice time for concepts and ideas that students may have missed during their regular school instruction. The Paraclete Center, in this way, provides support for existing school curricula. Its academic classes, however, are not a substitute for one-on-one tutoring for struggling students or for those who need specialized teaching because of learning disabilities.
